Overview

The Senior HVAC Design Engineer is responsible for leading, managing, and delivering HVAC design activities for assigned projects within a design consultancy environment. The role includes supervising HVAC engineers, managing design coordination, reviewing technical deliverables, ensuring compliance with project requirements, local authority regulations, and international standards, and ensuring that HVAC design packages are completed with the required quality and within the agreed project timeline.

The Senior HVAC Design Engineer reports to the Team Leader / Mechanical Lead and supports the Lead in technical coordination, client meetings, authority discussions, design reviews, and project delivery follow-up.

Responsibilities

· Lead and manage HVAC design activities for assigned projects in accordance with the project work program, scope of services, and department requirements.

· Take responsibility for the complete HVAC design delivery of assigned projects, including calculations, drawings, schedules, reports, specifications, and technical submissions.

· Guide, supervise, and review the work of HVAC Design Engineers and Project Design Engineers to ensure technical accuracy, quality, and timely completion.

· Ensure that HVAC design deliverables are completed on time and in compliance with project requirements, applicable Gulf regulations, local authority requirements, and international standards.

· Carry out and review HVAC design calculations, including cooling load calculations using HAP software, ventilation calculations, pressurization calculations, duct sizing, pipe sizing, and equipment sizing.

· Prepare, review, and assist in the development of technical reports, design narratives, concept reports, specifications, and design documentation.

· Prepare and review HVAC drawings, schematic diagrams, layouts, equipment schedules, and technical details at different project stages.

· Select and review main HVAC equipment, including AHUs, FAHUs, FCUs, split systems, exhaust fans, ventilation fans, pumps, chilled water accessories, air terminals, and other related mechanical equipment.

· Conduct thorough technical reviews of HVAC drawing packages, calculations, schedules, and specifications before internal review, client submission, authority submission, tender issue, or construction issue.

· Coordinate HVAC design with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, façade, ID, landscape, and other relevant disciplines.

· Identify design risks, coordination issues, missing information, authority requirements, and potential impacts on the project program, and report them to the Team Leader / Mechanical Lead.

· Support the Team Leader / Mechanical Lead in client meetings, design coordination meetings, technical workshops, and internal project progress meetings.

· Follow up with project team members to ensure that technical information, design inputs, and deliverables are properly coordinated and issued within the agreed timeline.

· Ensure that the Team Leader / Mechanical Lead is regularly updated on project progress, technical issues, pending information, design risks, and program status.

· Evaluate project design conditions, environmental factors, sustainability requirements, and energy efficiency considerations to support proper HVAC design decisions.

· Ensure that HVAC designs comply with relevant international standards and codes, including ASHRAE, SMACNA, ASPE, NFPA, and applicable local authority regulations.

· Demonstrate knowledge of client, operator, and authority procedures and standards to ensure proper compliance of design deliverables.

· Review supplier technical data, equipment selections, material proposals, and technical submittals when required.

· Maintain updated technical knowledge of HVAC systems, materials, construction techniques, sustainability requirements, and authority regulations.

· Ensure that lessons learned, updated materials, systems, and technical knowledge are applied and developed from project to project.

· Undertake special design tasks and project assignments as required by the Team Leader / Mechanical lead

Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

· Minimum 9+ years of HVAC design experience within recognized engineering consultancy firms.

· Strong experience in leading HVAC design delivery for commercial, residential, high-rise, Super high-rise, and mixed-use projects.

· Proven ability to lead and guide HVAC engineers and coordinate design activities across multiple disciplines.

· Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, including chilled water systems, DX systems, ventilation systems, smoke control interfaces, stair/lift pressurization systems, energy recovery systems, and energy-efficient design principles.

· Strong understanding of international standards and codes such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ASPE, NFPA, and applicable Gulf/local authority regulations.

· Strong experience in performing and reviewing HVAC load calculations using HAP software or equivalent approved engineering tools.

· Proficiency in selecting and reviewing HVAC equipment, including AHUs, FAHUs, FCUs, split systems, fans, pumps, chilled water accessories, air terminals, and related systems.

· Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, HAP, Microsoft Office, and other relevant engineering software.

· Ability to read, interpret, review, and coordinate architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.

· Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, building codes, construction techniques, building materials, and design coordination requirements.

· Ability to review full HVAC design packages and ensure quality, technical accuracy, and compliance before submission.

· Strong follow-up skills and ability to track technical information, design progress, pending inputs, and project deliverables.

· Capable of defining realistic timelines and managing the team to meet project deadlines.

· Able to work under pressure and manage multiple design tasks and project priorities effectively.

· Good interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally with team members, clients, authorities, operators, and project stakeholders.

· Strong communication skills, leadership skills, self-motivation, and commitment to continuous technical development and research.
