Overview
The Project Design Engineer – HVAC is responsible for leading and coordinating HVAC design activities for assigned projects within a design consultancy environment. The role includes guiding HVAC engineers, reviewing design outputs, coordinating with other disciplines, preparing technical documentation, and ensuring that HVAC designs are delivered in accordance with project requirements, applicable codes, international standards, quality procedures, and agreed timelines.
The position reports to the Senior HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Lead and supports the delivery of HVAC design packages from concept stage through detailed design and authority/tender submissions.
Responsibilities
· Lead and coordinate assigned HVAC design activities in accordance with the project work program, design scope, and department requirements.
· Guide and support HVAC Design Engineers in preparing calculations, layouts, equipment selections, schedules, and technical documentation.
· Prepare and review HVAC design drawings, calculations, equipment schedules, and technical outputs.
· Carry out HVAC design works, including load calculations, ventilation calculations, chilled water systems, DX systems, pressurization systems, and equipment sizing, as required.
· Prepare and assist in the development of technical reports, design narratives, concept reports, and specifications.
· Coordinate HVAC design with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and other MEP disciplines.
· Review architectural and structural drawings to identify HVAC requirements, space provisions, shaft requirements, equipment locations, and coordination constraints.
· Select and review main HVAC equipment, including AHUs, FAHUs, FCUs, split units, exhaust fans, ventilation fans, pumps, chilled water accessories, air terminals, and related mechanical equipment.
· Ensure HVAC designs comply with applicable international standards and codes such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ASPE, NFPA, and relevant local authority requirements.
· Follow up with team members to ensure technical information, design inputs, and project deliverables are completed within agreed timelines.
· Assist in responding to client comments, authority comments, RFI responses, and internal review comments.
· Support the Senior HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Lead in technical coordination meetings and design review discussions.
· Identify design risks, coordination issues, missing information, and potential impacts on project delivery.
· Assist in reviewing supplier technical data, material proposals, and equipment selections when required.
· Ensure proper documentation, design quality, and consistency of HVAC deliverables before submission.
· Undertake special design tasks and project assignments as required by the Senior HVAC Engineer / Mechanical Lead.
Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
· Minimum 6+ years of HVAC design experience within recognized engineering consultancy firms.
· Previous experience in guiding or coordinating HVAC engineers on design projects.
· Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, including chilled water systems, DX systems, ventilation systems, smoke control interfaces, pressurization systems, and energy-efficient design principles.
· Good knowledge of international standards and codes such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ASPE, NFPA, and applicable local authority regulations.
· Experience in performing and reviewing HVAC load calculations using HAP software or equivalent engineering tools.
· Proficiency in selecting and reviewing HVAC equipment, including AHUs, FAHUs, FCUs, split systems, fans, pumps, chilled water accessories, air terminals, and related mechanical systems.
· Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, HAP, Microsoft Office, and other relevant engineering software.
· Ability to read, interpret, and coordinate architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
· Good understanding of modern construction techniques, building materials, and design coordination requirements.
· Ability to follow technical instructions, written directives, project requirements, and quality procedures.
· Strong follow-up skills and ability to track technical information, pending inputs, and project deliverables.
· Capable of defining realistic timelines and supporting the team in meeting project deadlines.
· Able to work under pressure and manage multiple design tasks effectively.
· Good interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally with team members, senior engineers, clients, and project stakeholders.
